Leaky and malfunctioning fixtures and appliances are the main culprit of higher-than-normal water bills. A leaky toilet can waste as much as 20 cubic meters of water per day – that's approximately $30 per day!
To check for leaks, find the “trickle indicator”, a small red or black triangle on your water meter. Turn off any running water in your house or building and check to see if the trickle indicator is turning, moving or shaking. If it is, you probably have a leak somewhere.
To check if your toilet is leaking, lift the lid off of its water tank and add in some food colouring. Leave it for 20 minutes without flushing the toilet. If colour appears in the toilet bowl, your toilet's rod-and-ball assembly or flapper needs adjustment or replacement.
